About the museum

On March 25, 1995, vintage car enthusiasts in Hartmannsdorf founded the association Historische Nutzfahrzeuge (Historic Commercial Vehicles). The aim was to track down old trucks and other commercial vehicles, save them from being scrapped, and restore them. By the association's 20th anniversary in 2015, 65 vehicles had already been restored.

In 2001 the association opened the Sächsisches Nutzfahrzeugmuseum in the Hartmannsdorf industrial park. It is among the largest collections of historic trucks in Germany. The focus is on vehicles from Saxon manufacturers – from the oldest piece, a Chemnitz Presto from 1913, to a Robur from Zittau from 1990. West German makes are added to these.

Because the hall cannot hold all the restored vehicles, the roughly 50 large exhibits are rotated regularly. The display is complemented by engines, a cutaway model of an IFA S4000, display boards on the Saxon commercial vehicle industry, a historic workshop, an old gas station, and a bus stop for the first Saxon bus line. Every year on May 1, the association holds a large vintage vehicle meeting.
