About the museum

The local history museum's collection has been growing for around sixty years. Since 2004 it has been housed in the “Alte Schmiede” (Old Forge) at Topfmarkt 7, one of the town's oldest house plots. Over time the plot belonged, among others, to two mayors; from the early 19th century a forge stood here, which was in operation until the mid-1950s.

The tour therefore begins in a working forge. On the ground floor, the exhibits cover the significance of the Elbe and fishing, crafts, agriculture, brewing, wine-growing and market trade, as well as jurisdiction, with the Belgern Roland and coin finds from the area. The former courtyard passage shows parts of the 1730 Distanzsäule (distance column) and other stone monuments.

The upper floor, in a restored half-timbered house, is devoted to prehistory and early history, documented by finds from the surrounding area from the Neolithic to the Late Bronze Age, including finds from the cemetery near Liebersee. Further highlights are pottery crafts, which played a major role here until the 1950s, the Privileged Shooting Guild (Privilegierte Schützengilde), and a dedicated room for the Lower Sorbian graphic artist Friedrich Kittler. A display storeroom with pewter, books, weapons and a 16th-century breastplate rounds off the collection.
