About the museum
The Sprucker Mühle in the Guben district of Altsprucke is a former grain mill on the Schwarzes Fließ, a stream that once drove seven water mills on its way to the Neisse. The "Sprockische Mühle" is first documented in 1363. Around 1900 the water wheel was replaced by a turbine, and in 1970 the mill ceased operation.
In 1979/80 the city of Guben bought the listed buildings to set up a museum. After a five-year conversion, during which mainly the milling technology was preserved, the local history museum opened in May 1985 with its first permanent exhibition, marking the city's 750th anniversary. In 1996 the exhibition was redesigned and the outdoor grounds were restored; the neighboring barn was reconstructed and opened in 1997 as an exhibition and event venue.
The permanent exhibition covers the prehistory and early history of the region, Guben's town history from the Middle Ages to 1945, its rise as an industrial and garden city, the hat industry, and cultural and social history. A small part covers Sorbian folklore. The preserved milling technology, with milling floor, Schrotgang (coarse-grinding mill) and roller mills of the 19th and 20th centuries, is part of the tour as a technical monument.
