About the museum

The Izba Muzealna Stowarzyszenia Przyjaciół Ziemi Gubińskiej (museum room of the Association of Friends of the Gubin Land) was founded on 24 September 2004 on the initiative of the association's members, who have run it since the beginning. It is located on the third floor of a four-storey building from 1913 at ul. 3 Maja, right next to the Baszta Bramy Ostrowskiej (Ostrów Gate Tower). In the same building, funded by the manufacturer Adolf Wolf, the municipal museum of Guben operated from 1913 to 1945.

The room consists of two exhibition rooms. In the main room, the artefacts are arranged by theme: prehistory, the history of the town, applied art, places, honorary citizens of Gubin and “Nasze miasto” (Our Town). Among other things, it shows archaeological finds, everyday objects from the past, technical relics, documents and photographs, including mementos of pre-war residents and of the first Polish settlers. The collection comprises about a thousand objects.

The second room, which has its own entrance from the stairwell, is devoted entirely to the Polish Army units stationed in Gubin between 1945 and 2002. Apart from information panels on the history of the garrison, visitors can see weapons from the Second World War, original uniforms, orders and badges, and a copy of the banner of the 5 Kresowa Dywizja Zmechanizowana (5th Kresy Mechanised Division) named after King Bolesław Chrobry. The association also gives visitors access to the Baszta Ostrowska (Ostrów Tower), dating from the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries.
