Bad Cannstatt in den 70er-Jahren. Pro Alt-Cannstatt wird 50

A look back at a decade of old town redevelopment, the pedestrian zone, the first Wein- und Brezelfest (wine and pretzel festival) and the 1977 Bundesgartenschau (Federal Garden Show) – with loans from private owners. The occasion is the 50th anniversary of the Pro Alt-Cannstatt association.

About the museum

The museum goes back to a citizens' initiative: in 1959 local historian Erwin Hageloh and painter Hermann Metzger set up a first local history museum for Cannstatt on Wilhelmstraße. The idea was supported by committed residents who wanted to preserve the history of Stuttgart's oldest and most populous district.

Since December 1988 the museum, under the name Stadtmuseum Bad Cannstatt, has been housed in the Scheuer (barn) next to the Klösterle. The half-timbered building from 1463 is considered the oldest surviving residential building in Stuttgart. That the ensemble still stands at all is thanks to the association Pro Alt-Cannstatt and architect Hermann Kugler: in the 1970s a department store with a parking garage was to be built in its place; instead, the main building was carefully restored in line with heritage standards by 1984.

In 2008 the first floor was redesigned with sections on prehistory, the Roman period and urban development, followed in 2016 by the permanent exhibition "Panorama Cannstatt" on the upper floor. It presents Cannstatt as a bathing and spa resort, a royal and literary town and an early industrial location, and introduces well-known personalities. Among the most impressive pieces are a travertine block bearing traces of a campsite some 250,000 years old, a diorama of the Roman fort and a detailed model of the medieval town.

Today the museum is part of the museum family of the StadtPalais – Museum für Stuttgart. Regular special exhibitions explore individual chapters of local history in depth; the museum is supported by the Vereinigung Cannstatter Vereine and by Pro Alt-Cannstatt.
