About the museum
The Straßenbahnmuseum shows the history of Stuttgart local transport. It began with the association Stuttgarter Historische Straßenbahnen, founded in 1987, which preserves vehicles and technical equipment. A predecessor museum existed from 1995 to 2007 in a former tram shed in Zuffenhausen. On July 4, 2009, the house opened as Straßenbahnwelt Stuttgart in the former tram depot in Bad Cannstatt. In 2018, for the jubilee "150 Jahre SSB", it was renamed Straßenbahnmuseum Stuttgart.
The building was constructed as a depot in 1929 and is a listed monument. The lower hall is the public exhibition area; the upper hall with the operational vehicles is accessible only on guided tours. On roughly 2,500 square meters, the exhibition spans from the first horse tram car of 1868 to the "Stuttgarter Klassiker" GT4, which the Stadtbahn replaced in 2007. Theme islands cover operations and technology, and a separate exhibition is devoted to buses.
On Sundays, historic trams run as vintage lines over the preserved metre-gauge network, for example to the Hauptbahnhof or to the Fernsehturm. The museum is run by Stuttgarter Straßenbahnen AG together with the association; a bistro and a museum shop are part of it.
