About the museum

Members of the Historical Association founded the Tölz museum in 1886; since 1930/31 the town of Bad Tölz has been its sponsor. Among the early showpieces is the magnificent gala sedan chair of the Counts of Toerring-Seefeld from the 18th century, which was rediscovered in 2016, restored and shown in the Bavarian State Exhibition in 2019.

Initially housed at Schloßplatz, the collection moved in 1982 to the former Bürgerbräu property on Marktstraße. The Munich architect Gabriel von Seidl had converted the building into a town hall in the Heimatstil from 1903; after the city administration moved out in 1979, it became a Heimat- und Bürgerhaus (local heritage and community house), in which the tourist information office is now also located.

Between 2009 and 2021 the permanent exhibition was redesigned in several stages. On more than 800 square meters, around 2,000 objects are spread over 38 thematic areas: the second floor deals with landscape, crafts, raft trade and brewing tradition, the third with the interplay of nobility and bourgeoisie up to the 20th century, the fourth with folk belief, customs and leisure.

On the first floor, the Bürgersaal and gallery show changing exhibitions; the historic council chamber serves as an event space. In fall 2026 the building will receive new, energy-saving LED lighting.
