About the museum
The Lenggries local history museum is located on Rathausplatz in the town centre and is run by the municipality; the municipal archive is also part of the building.
The permanent exhibition is divided into seven areas. It begins with the wildlife of the municipal area and the early settlement of the upper Isar valley in the Early Bronze Age. In the Middle Ages two castles were built here at a narrow point of the valley; the relationship between castle and village runs through the presentation up to the present day. Objects from the 17th century onwards tell of local history, Antlass shooters, popular piety and traditional costume.
A museum trail leads on through customs, crafts, and farming and alpine pasture management to log rafting, for which Lenggries is known as an international rafting village; hunting and poaching are also covered. A virtual reconstruction lets visitors explore Hohenburg Castle in its state shortly before its decay in the 18th century, complemented by a few original finds.
