About the museum
The Tiermuseum in Lenggries presents Europe’s wildlife in re-created habitats, from the high mountains to the seacoast. The focus is on mounted specimens of native wild animals, including brown bear, lynx and wolf, the wolverine from Scandinavia, the raccoon dog, which has spread in from the east, as well as foxes, badgers, wildcats, otters, deer, chamois, marmots and many small mammals.
The museum also covers Europe’s birds in depth: about 1,200 birds are arranged by habitat, including open country, forest, moor, water, coast and high mountains. With this display, the museum wants to foster a love of nature and draw attention to the shrinking habitats of wild animals and birds as well as to environmental toxins. Many of the species shown are extinct or endangered in the region.
A shop selling traditional costume jewelry, lederhosen, loden clothing, hunting accessories and home accessories is attached to the museum. At present, the museum and shop are closed for operational reasons; the operators are looking for a successor.
