Stadtmuseum Freising
Town history museum in the Baroque Asamgebäude on Marienplatz: around 350 objects on the history of Freising from prehistory to today.
About the museum
In 1890 citizens of Freising founded the Historischer Verein (Historical Association) and with it a museum of town history. For decades the association assembled a collection ranging from the Neolithic to the present. For a long time it was housed in the St.-Georgs-Schule; in 1965 it moved to the former prince-bishop's college on Marienplatz, the so-called Asamgebäude, where it was shown on around 250 square meters.
In 2007 the museum reopened as a Stadtmuseum after a redesign. Since then the town of Freising has been the sponsor, while the collection remains the property of the Historischer Verein. A depot was set up in the school's former detention cell, whose walls pupils decorated with inscriptions and pictures in the 18th century.
Because of the general renovation of the Asamgebäude, the museum was closed from 2017 to 2024; during this time it was present at other locations in the town as the "Fliegendes Museum" (Flying Museum) with exhibitions and tours. In July 2024 the expanded museum opened in the renovated rooms. A tour around the inner courtyard now leads through the history of the old episcopal town with archaeological finds, works of art, handicraft products and documents, complemented by a graphic art cabinet and a room on the history of the building.
