Bronzezeit Bayern Museum
Archaeological museum on the Pantaleonsberg in Kranzberg on the Bronze Age in Bavaria and the gold and amber finds from Bernstorf.
About the museum
The impetus for the museum came from finds in Bernstorf, a district of Kranzberg. There, two amateur archaeologists, Traudl Bachmaier and Dr. Manfred Moosauer, began investigating traces at the edge of a gravel pit in 1994 and came across the remains of a timber-and-earth wall from the Middle Bronze Age that had been destroyed by fire. In 1998 a gold hoard came to light there, and two years later amber finds followed. With a wall about 1.6 kilometers long, the fortification enclosed roughly 13 hectares and is considered the largest known of its kind north of the Alps.
The Bronzezeit Bayern Museum opened in 2014. It is located in the town center on the Pantaleonsberg, a steep hill above the Amper valley on which a castle stood in the Middle Ages. The present building next to the chapel was renovated with the great help of volunteers and inaugurated in 2007; celebrations and art exhibitions take place on the first floor, while the museum is on the second floor.
The operator is the municipality of Kranzberg. Since 2015, the Förderverein Pantaleonsberg Kranzberg (friends' association) has taken care of the development and upkeep of the house; its members are on site during opening hours and offer tours on request.
Using display panels, finds, films, and specialist literature, the exhibition conveys how people lived in Central Europe in the second millennium BC and what connections reached as far as the Mediterranean region. The gold jewelry from Bernstorf can be seen as a replica.
