About the museum

The city museum occupies the upper floors of the Killinger House, a handsome half-timbered building on König-Adolf-Platz, the central square of Idstein's old town. The tourist information office is on the ground floor, and a spiral staircase leads from there up to the museum rooms.

The exhibition tells the roughly 900-year history of the town. On the second floor, the displays cover church history, urban development and construction history, self-government, civic rights and duties, the history of the castle and palace, the Walramian line of the House of Nassau, and the history of schooling.

The third floor is devoted to rural living conditions in the 18th and 19th centuries, crafts and trades, Idstein's leather industry, and the Merz brewery. Works by the Idstein artist Ernst Toepfer rotate on two walls.
