About the museum
The Kahla city museum was founded in 1978: a heritage display of the porcelain works first became an exhibition of the Kulturbund and finally a local history museum. Because of structural damage, the building had to close in 2000.
It is housed in the Metznersches Haus, a half-timbered building from around 1600 and one of the oldest houses in town. The half-timbering with fan-shaped rosettes is unusual for the region. After extensive renovation, the museum reopened in April 2006.
The exhibition shows Kahla's town history, living rooms of the 19th century, traditional crafts and the porcelain production that shapes the town, including a porcelain painter's workstation, a historic general store and a kitchen from 1920. On the upper floor, an exhibition is devoted to REIMAHG, the underground armaments plant near Kahla in 1944/45.
