About the museum
The Leun city museum came into being as part of village renewal. In 1982 the opportunity arose to acquire a vacant property next to the former town hall. The listed half-timbered house at Limburger Straße 3 was renovated and supplemented by a meeting place, to which a museum was to be attached. The initiative came from the mayor of the time. Museum and House of Encounter opened on November 17, 1984.
A volunteer working group formed in 1984 from interested residents of Leun built up the basic collection, which people gathered from households and workshops. Later, the attic of the half-timbered house was converted, and the neighboring barn bought by the town was added as a museum barn. Today the Verein für Heimatgeschichte Leun (local history association) looks after the museum.
The collections show town history, rural and middle-class domestic culture, and crafts and historic children's games across three floors. In the Old Town Hall, a spinning room with one of the largest egg cup collections in Hesse, along with a kitchen and living room from the 1950s, completes the picture. The barn holds a forge, a butcher's shop, a bakery and agricultural equipment.
