About the museum
The Old House in Holzhausen, a district of Greifenstein, is a half-timbered house built around 1750. After the owners died it was to be demolished, but the municipality bought it and handed it over to the village's local heritage and history association.
From autumn 1966, the teacher Heinrich Jung collected old objects throughout the village. Association members restored them and renovated the house themselves, guided by the memories of older villagers. In September 1967 the house was opened to the public.
The kitchen and the good parlor on the ground floor, and the chamber and bedroom upstairs, show how most villagers lived around 1900. It is not a conventional museum: nothing is behind glass, and the objects may be touched. Visitors are mainly school classes.
