About the museum
The palace in Werdorf was built at the end of the 17th century by Countess Ernestine Sophie von Solms-Greifenstein as a widow's and summer residence. After a varied history, it was renovated in the early 1990s and, together with its outbuildings, has since served as the museum of the town of Aßlar.
The museum goes back to the Verein für Heimatgeschichte Werdorf, founded in 1980. In 1982 the association took over three rooms in the palace and opened them to visitors on August 22, 1982. In the following years further rooms and the Remise (carriage house) with agricultural equipment were added. In 1989 the building was emptied for a thorough renovation; in December 1992 the town of Aßlar handed the renovated museum over to the association, which has been opening it regularly on two Sundays a month since October 1993.
The display shows rural life with a bedroom, kitchen, storeroom and laundry room, opposite which stands the Fürstenzimmer (princes' room), furnished with Biedermeier furniture. There are also workshops of a blacksmith, carpenter, rope maker, printer, shoemaker and tailor, a hairdresser's shop, a Tante-Emma-Laden, a classroom, toys, radio and television sets from before 1950, a railway exhibition and fire engines.
