About the museum

The idea for a Löbau museum was prompted by Karl Benjamin Preusker, born here, who is regarded as the founder of Saxon archaeology and gave parts of his collection to the council library. The idea was only realized, however, by a citizens' initiative around the brewery director Julius Sandt: on May 3, 1894, it showed an antiquities exhibition in the town hall, whose success led the city council to found the museum in the same year.

Because the rooms in the town hall quickly became too small, the museum moved in 1899 to the building at Johannisstraße 5, where it remains to this day. The collection grew steadily through donations and purchases and today comprises tens of thousands of objects from archaeology, geology, city history, fine arts, decorative arts, and folk culture. Pieces on the history of the Upper Lusatian Six Towns League and on the Reformation in the region are of national significance.

From 1997 to 2018 the museum was called the Oberlausitzer Sechsstädtebund- und Handwerksmuseum. Since 2021 the city's history has been told in a new, thematically organized permanent exhibition, complemented by an exhibition on the city's crafts. The museum also regularly shows special exhibitions from its own holdings. In the long term, a move to the former Anker pasta factory next to the Haus Schminke is planned.
