About the museum
The Schunkelhaus was built around 1730 and, with a floor area of only about 90 square meters, is one of the oldest half-timbered buildings in the area. It served as a residence until 1990 and is now a small museum that illustrates the living conditions of ordinary people in the 18th and 19th centuries with original furnishings.
Obercunnersdorf is a Umgebindedorf (village of Umgebinde houses) with around 250 listed buildings; the combination of log construction (Blockstube) and half-timbering (Fachwerk) is considered one of the most important building traditions of European folk architecture. The Schunkelhaus is one of the best-known houses in the village and a stop on the tourist information office's guided village walks.
