About the museum

The post windmill was built in 1843 on the Pfarrberg, about 435 meters high, above Kottmarsdorf and ground grain for exactly one hundred years. At times three such mills stood in the village; the surviving one, thanks to its elevated position, can be seen from far away from the direction of Löbau and from the Oberland.

After milling ended, the mill was preserved as a technical monument and became the cultural center of the village. Since 1993, visitors can experience how the wooden structure, weighing about 50 tons, is turned as a whole around its post into the wind. The municipality of Kottmar and the association Natur- und Heimatfreunde Kottmarsdorf look after its upkeep together; volunteer mill guides explain how flour used to be ground.

In the neighboring miller's house, formerly the home of the miller, who was also a farmer and baker, the association set up a demonstration bakery with a wood-fired oven in 1996. On individual baking days, bread and cake are baked there the old-fashioned way and sold. From the mill, a signposted mill circuit trail leads to former mill sites in the village.
