About the museum
The Stadtmuseum Rastatt was founded in 1895. Since 1973 its collections have been housed in a baroque town palace at Herrenstraße 11, in the heart of the city opposite the Residenzschloss.
The permanent exhibition on town history tells the story of Rastatt over the past roughly 300 years, with a focus on the Peace of Rastatt of 1714, the Congress of Rastatt 1797–1799, the construction of the federal fortress and the Baden Revolution of 1848/49 through to the post-war period. A second permanent exhibition introduces the prehistory and early history of the region, with topics including the princely grave of Hügelsheim, the Celtic period and the Merovingian period; audio guide stations deepen the understanding of individual objects.
The museum also includes the Schlackenwerth Room in the Rossi-Haus, which recalls the close connection with the formerly Bohemian town of Schlackenwerth (now Ostrov), and the Kantorenhaus as a branch with a documentation room on the Jewish history of Rastatt.
