People from the region's art and culture scene act as curators, selecting works from the municipal art collection (focus: art in Baden after 1945) and supplementing them with personal statements.
About the museum
The building was erected in 1854 as the fruit and flour hall of the federal fortress of Rastatt and served as a city hall until the BadnerHalle was built in 1989. Karlsruhe architect Helmut Bätzner converted it into an exhibition house from 1990; in 1993 the Städtische Galerie Fruchthalle was inaugurated and has since been the city's art museum.
Outside, a belt of 19 majolica round windows in glowing “Fruchtfarben” (fruit colors) and a bronze head by Jürgen Goertz above the entrance, depicting a muse of the visual arts, recall both the earlier and the current use. Inside, several levels connected by a generous ramp and stairs provide around 500 square meters of exhibition space; ceiling arches and exposed steel girders create the impression of a postmodern basilica.
The program consists of changing solo and group exhibitions with a focus on contemporary art and art after 1945. Works from the municipal collection, which comprises more than 1,000 pieces with a focus on art in Baden after 1945, are shown alongside young positions. The format “Rampe Fruchthalle” gives young artists and students a stage.
