About the museum

The Stadtmuseum Neustadt an der Weinstraße is located on the ground floor of Villa Böhm. Karlsruhe architect Ludwig Levy built it between 1886 and 1889 for the banker Adolf Dacqué, in the style of Italian villas. Ownership later changed several times; in 1935 the town acquired the house. Among other uses, it served in 1936 as the “Reichskommissariat” of the Nazi Gauleiter Josef Bürckel, after 1945 as the seat of occupation offices, and later as an administrative building. The villa was extensively restored from 1996 to 2003.

The town museum has been housed in the building since 1970; the art association has had its seat on the upper floor since 1978. The permanent exhibition runs through nine rooms, from the town's founding and its town charter of 1275 to the present. Themed islands cover subjects such as the Stiftskirche (collegiate church), the Casimirianum and the Harnisch prints, the Palatinate under French and Bavarian rule, the Hambach Festival of 1832, and well-known Neustadters such as Hans Geiger and Walter Bruch.

Media terminals, display cases with drawers and switches, and books to leaf through make the museum a hands-on exhibition. The former dining room and other rooms also recall the villa's history; in the former winter garden, the history of the house and the park is told.
