The Städtische Galerie Bremen was established in 1985 as a municipal exhibition venue, to give Bremen's art scene a place with curatorial support. It was first housed in the Weserburg and had to vacate it when the building was converted into the Museum für Moderne Kunst in 1991.
Since then it has used the former fermentation and storage cellars of the Remmer brewery on Buntentorsteinweg. During the conversion of the brewery site, unplastered brick walls, timber framing and iron girders remained visible, and the old water tower received a glass top. The ensemble was honored with the BDA Prize in 1994. Across roughly 600 square meters, the gallery presents first presentations of young art, career surveys and retrospectives, contributions to Bremen's art history of the 20th century, and projects on art in public space.
The gallery belongs to the specialist department for visual arts at the Senator for Culture. Since its founding it has organized the Bremer Förderpreis für Bildende Kunst and manages the municipal art collection of more than 6,000 works from the 20th and 21st centuries, with a focus on regional positions. Public institutions in Bremen can borrow originals from it on loan.
