Paintings, drawings and objects combine native animals, houses, clouds and kitchenware into surreal, humorous pictorial worlds.
The Städtische Galerie was founded in 1988, when the painter and graphic artist Franz Belting, born in Lehrte, gave his hometown 110 works. At first the town showed only this collection, initially in rooms on Königstraße and from 1993 on Ahltener Straße. From 1996 onward, exhibitions of contemporary art, mainly painting, were regularly added there.
Since February 2006 the gallery has been housed in the Alte Schlosserei, a clinker-brick building erected in 1952 on the grounds of the former sugar factory, which was renovated in 2005. The house presents several changing exhibitions of contemporary art each year and has an event space with a stage, where visual and performing arts come together.
Belting's works, which in his later years he mainly produced with wax crayons in an abstracting visual language, are mostly kept in the gallery's storage and are shown only occasionally in exhibitions. A selection hangs in the council chamber of the town hall and can be viewed by registration.
Admission is free.
Visiting the exhibitions is free of charge.
