Stadtmuseum Burgdorf
Town museum in a 17th-century Ackerbürgerhaus (farmer-townsman's house) with changing exhibitions on Burgdorf's history and a tin figure collection.
About the museum
The Stadtmuseum occupies a two-story half-timbered house with a half-hipped roof in the northwest of Burgdorf's old town. It was built in the 17th century as an Ackerbürgerhaus and, after the great town fire of 1809, served as a wheelwright's workshop. The town of Burgdorf acquired and renovated the listed building and opened its museum there in 1983.
Since 1998 operations have been in the hands of the town's Verkehrs- und Verschönerungs-Verein (VVV), while the building remains municipal property. The volunteer work is supported by the Förderverein Stadtmuseum (friends' association), which also publishes books on local history; the Hannover Region provides institutional funding for the museum.
There is hardly a permanent exhibition in the classical sense. In one room the association draws on its holdings, from prehistory and early history through town history to folklore, and presents individual eras in rotation, each embedded in regional history. A second room is devoted to the tin figure collection, which is noted far beyond Burgdorf and is the occasion for a nationwide collectors' meeting.
The program is complemented by lectures, readings, discussion rounds with eyewitnesses, slide shows and concerts. In this way the small house on Schmiedestraße has developed into a cultural meeting place of the town.
