About the museum
The Regional-Museum Sehnde goes back to an association founded in 2001 to document regional history in the area of today's town of Sehnde. The collection was first housed in temporary premises until it found a permanent home in the district of Rethmar.
The museum is located in an outbuilding of the former Rethmar knight's estate, in the old horse stable. The permanent exhibition has existed since 2007 and was revised in 2017. On the upper floor it is devoted to the historical region "Das Große Freie", an association of 14 villages whose farmers enjoyed their own jurisdiction and other special rights for centuries. Maps, books, banners, trophies, traditional costumes and many everyday objects show how the landscape and population changed over time. Among the pieces is a restored banner of the "Freien" from 1863.
The sponsor is the association Regional-Museum Sehnde e.V. The museum shows the everyday life and history of the region in a permanent exhibition.
