About the museum
The Heimatmuseum "Alte Bergschule" was opened in 1992 to mark Hünxe's 900th anniversary and has been open to the public ever since. The building was a village school: in the classroom, all children from first to eighth grade were taught together until 1954. The room is furnished as it was and equipped with documents and exhibits, which is why it draws school classes as well as visitors from the region.
The sponsor is the Heimat- und Verkehrsverein Hünxe (local heritage and transport society), refounded in 1976. The tour includes the cellar chamber as the teacher's bedroom and his living room, a permanent exhibition of paintings by the artist August Oppenberg, and many objects from households, agriculture, beekeeping and a wooden clog workshop.
A special piece is the skull of a mammoth, which a club member discovered in August 2000 near Gartrop-Bühl on the Lippe. It was prepared and reconstructed and has been displayed at its assumed living height since 2002; the original tusk lies in a protected display case with sediment from the find site. The museum also shows other prehistoric finds, changing exhibitions and a Christmas exhibition every year.
