About the museum

The Städtisches Museum Medebach is housed in a typical Sauerland half-timbered townhouse from the late 18th century on Oberstraße. It is run on a volunteer basis by the local Heimat- und Geschichtsverein (local history society), which, besides the museum, also looks after the preservation of customs and local history; according to the society, the museum has existed since 1991.

The exhibition traces the path of Medebach and its districts from the medieval Hanseatic and farming town to today's vacation destination. In five chronologically arranged rooms and three thematic rooms, it covers prehistory and early history, the Middle Ages, administration and jurisdiction, church history, industrialization, and life during the world wars. A special focus is on trade and crafts, in particular the once widespread shoemaking trade, whose products Medebach merchants sold far beyond the region.

The collection includes archaeological finds as well as household and craft utensils. Digital media stations and a geo and history portal complement the rooms. In the neighboring Hansesaal of the former town hall, a model railway layout shows the former narrow-gauge railway between Steinhelle and Medebach.
