About the museum
The Westdeutsches Wintersport Museum opened in 1998 in Neuastenberg, a district of Winterberg at the foot of the Kahler Asten. It is housed in the Schultenhof right next to the church and shows, across about 250 square meters on two levels, how winter sports developed in the Sauerland.
For more than a century, the region has been one of Germany's major winter sports areas. When Chief Forester Hagemann first stood on skis in Winterberg in 1889, a development began that brought winter tourism to the Sauerland with the railway connection in 1906. The first ski clubs were founded, and in 1910 the Bobclub Winterberg was established and built the first bobsled run.
The permanent exhibition is organized into eight thematic areas: from woven snowshoes and the Trilling, through a reconstructed wheelwright's workshop where the first skis were made, to equipment over time. Further areas are devoted to the Skiklub Sauerland and the later Westdeutscher Skiverband, to ice skating, and to sleds and bobsleds. A separate section commemorates the spoon carvers (Löffelschnitzer), who made wooden spoons as home work during the long winters until 1949. The exhibition is regularly updated.
