About the museum
The museum's origins go back to Mayor Paul Lemcke, who in 1903, together with his assistant Karl Schindler, laid the foundation of a municipal collection with the intention of founding a museum. Later, the applied arts collection of the citizen Paul Blell was added.
Since 1927, the museum has been housed in the former villa of the hosiery manufacturer and Kommerzienrat (honorary title for a businessman) Ferdinand Schopper. Built in 1888 on Aumaische Straße, the house displays historicism in its architecture and furnishings and is itself part of the museum experience. The Thuringian Museum Association has awarded the house its museum seal.
The permanent exhibition spans from the founding of the town and its granting of town rights in 1438 to the present day, and presents the trades and industries typical of Zeulenroda. The most important part of the collection is furniture made in Zeulenroda from about 1830 to 1985, shown as individual pieces and in fully furnished salons and rooms. A friends' association supports the museum in preserving and acquiring objects.
