City museum in Eibenstock with an embroidery demonstration workshop, mining history, a large collection of Erzgebirge folk art and mechanical landscapes.
Shown are Erzgebirge amethyst geodes and other quartz from the region, from Mildenau to Herold, from the collections of Norbert Häusler and Jan Wolke. It also explains how the violet colour arises.
About the museum
As early as 1909, the Eibenstock town council called for people to collect keepsakes for a future museum. The plan was only taken up again in 1937: by 1939, 47 items were shown in the display window of a dry cleaner's. To mark the 800th anniversary of the mining town, a local heritage museum opened in 1955; until 1997 it was housed at Platz des Friedens.
In 1997 the museum moved to Bürgermeister-Hesse-Straße and reopened as the Stickereimuseum (Embroidery Museum), with an embroidery demonstration workshop where large embroidery machines are shown in operation, and a local heritage display including a model of the former steep railway line. In 2012 the Trumpold Collection with around 15,000 figures of Erzgebirge folk art was added; in 2018 the carving collection of Gottfried Krauß and the Mechanical Landscapes of Peter Uhlig followed. Today the house presents itself as Schatzhaus Erzgebirge.
The background to the embroidery exhibition is local history: after the decline of tin mining around 1760, Clara Angermann brought tambour embroidery to Eibenstock in 1775. Hand embroidery machines became established from 1829, the shuttle embroidery machine followed in 1883, and the punch-card machine in 1910. Around 1900, Eibenstock embroidery dominated the world market.
