About the museum

The museum goes back to the association Straßenbahnmuseum Dresden e. V., which 15 streetcar enthusiasts founded on June 2, 1992, at the Mickten streetcar depot – almost 120 years after the start of the first Dresden horse-drawn tram. At first the collection comprised 19 cars, most in need of restoration, spread over several depots. After an agreement with the Dresden transport company, the association moved to Coswig at the end of 1992 and in early 1996 to its present home at the Trachenberge depot in the Pieschen district.

The historic hall served as a stable for the horse-drawn tram's horses at the beginning of the 20th century. Today the association, with more than 160 members, looks after around 41 vehicles, from the Berolina motor car built in 1902 to Tatra cars from the 1980s. Many of them are in running order and are used on the Dresden network on open days and for chartered special trips, including the famous Hecht cars of the 1930s. Since 2011 the museum has shared the building with an association that maintains historic buses of Dresden's public transport.

In addition to the vehicles, the exhibition shows workplaces from the transport company, such as those of the dispatcher, cashier, and network control center, as well as uniforms, plans, photos, ticket validators, and a canteen corner in 1970s style. The collection is complemented by freight and work cars as well as vehicles of the Lockwitztalbahn and the freight railway in Freital.
