About the museum

The Trabi Museum Berlin opened on June 1, 2014, on Zimmerstraße in Kreuzberg, just a few steps from the former Checkpoint Charlie border crossing. It is run by the Berlin Trabi rental company “Trabi World” of East Car Tours GmbH & Co. KG, which also offers guided city drives in a Trabant from here; the museum and the tour business are thus right next to each other.

The exhibition is devoted to the Trabant, which was built in Zwickau from 1958 to 1991 and was the only car within reach for a large share of East German (GDR) households. Around 20 vehicles and several engines show its development, from the early P 50 and P 60 models through the 601 in numerous colors and versions, to special versions for the army, the Volkspolizei (People's Police), and motorsport.

Special features include a Trabant with a roof tent from East German camping culture, one converted into a “tank,” a car tuned for racing, and predecessors such as the AWZ P 70 with a wooden body and a DKW from the 1930s. A small cinema shows films about the history of the car and its role in everyday life in the GDR.
