About the museum
The Wald- und Moormuseum is located in Berumerfehn, municipality of Großheide, on the edge of the raised bog and directly next to the Berumerfehner Wald. It is housed in a former village school building and, according to the municipality, was founded around sixty years ago. The museum is now run by the municipality of Großheide.
In 2023 the building was comprehensively modernized with the help of many volunteers and public funding, without giving up the nostalgic charm of the old collection. Two large, lovingly designed dioramas show the two habitats of forest and moor, with a considerable number of native taxidermy animals.
The exhibition is divided into several themed areas: the formation of the moor, the former peat cutting, the settlement of Berumerfehn, and environmental and nature conservation, including the consequences of human activity for nature. A classroom, guided tours, children's birthday parties with a forest rally and a virtual tour online complete the offering.
