About the museum
St. Mary's Church in Marienhafe was built in the course of the 13th century and was originally a much larger building, whose length nearly matched the dimensions of Osnabrück Cathedral. From 1829 to 1831 the building was substantially reduced; the tower and parts of the east side remained in their original state.
Tradition links the tower with the sea robber Klaus Störtebeker, who is said to have dwelt here at the end of the 14th century. On the first floor of the tower, in the so-called Störtebeker chamber, the church museum displays documentation on the building history. On view are remnants of a sandstone frieze and sculpture fragments that were saved during the dismantling and once adorned the church.
A narrow stone spiral staircase leads to the observation platform at a height of 32 meters, with a wide view across East Frisia.
