About the museum
The Waloseum opened in 2006 in the former transmitter building of Norddeich Radio in the Norden district of Osterloog, around five kilometres east of the Norddeich seal station. It is operated by the Verein zur Erforschung und Erhaltung des Seehundes (association for the research and conservation of the seal), which runs it as a second facility alongside the Seehundstation Nationalpark-Haus.
At its heart is the preserved skeleton of an approximately 15-metre sperm whale bull, which stranded off Norderney in 2003. The exhibition "Unterwasserwelten erleben" (Experiencing Underwater Worlds) lets visitors listen to whale songs, takes them through the evolutionary history of marine mammals, and shows whales and dolphins of the North Sea. Several hands-on stations explain the animals of the North Sea coast.
The upper floor is devoted to the inhabitants of the Wadden Sea and the birdlife of the coast, and shows the diversity and adaptability of the habitat in the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea. The house also contains the quarantine station of the seal station. Here young seals, and sometimes grey seals, are given seasonal veterinary care and observation before they move on to the other animals at the station in Norddeich.
