Wassermühle Schulze Westerath
Late medieval double mill of Baumberg sandstone in the Stever valley near Nottuln, now a working museum mill with tours by arrangement.
About the museum
The Schulze Westerath farm in the Nottuln district of Stevern has been documented in writing since the late 13th century. The present mill building, made of carefully dressed Baumberg sandstone blocks, was built in the late Middle Ages (dendrochronological studies point to around 1490), initially as a residence, and was converted into a mill by the end of the 16th century at the latest. A lintel with a sundial bears the year 1666.
The complex was designed as a double mill for grain and oil and stood on the young Stever, which here, just below its source, powered several mills. In 1928 a Francis turbine replaced the water wheels; milling ended in 1974. The building has been a listed monument since 1990.
From 2006 to 2014 the mill underwent extensive restoration with support from the Deutsche Stiftung Denkmalschutz, the NRW-Stiftung and private donors, among others. Since its reopening in May 2014 it has been a working museum mill with largely preserved wooden milling technology. The owner family shows the building on guided tours and demonstration millings by arrangement; it can be seen from the outside at any time.
