About the museum
The house on Berliner Straße was set up in 1776 by the Berlin merchant Jacob Friedrich Heyl as a manufactory for weavers; it also served as a customs house. Later it was used, among other things, as a school and, in the GDR period, as a kindergarten, nursery and youth home; after reunification it briefly housed a doctor's practice and a district nursing station.
Between 1996 and 1998, the city of Jüterbog converted the building into the Webermuseum, which opened on May 1, 1998. In 1994, the friends' association had supported the move of master hand weaver Roswitha Moxter to Kloster Zinna; after her death in 2004 and a buyback by the city in 2006, her working looms and equipment returned to the museum.
The exhibition tells of the founding of the weaver colony by Frederick II after 1764 and of the rise and decline of the weaving industry. Among the pieces are old hand looms and the restored association banner of the journeymen weavers' brotherhood from 1779. Currently the house is not regularly open to visitors, because no operator has been found for the associated café.
