About the museum
The HeimatMuseum of the town of Luckenwalde is located on the market square; the building also includes a special exhibition room in the town hall. Its permanent exhibition opened in 2006 and tells the town's history from the Luckenwalde castle to today's biotechnology park. The focus is on the developments that shaped the town economically and socially: royal decisions, the rise to an industrial town, Social Democrats and freethinkers, inventors and factory owners, economic crises, National Socialism, the planned economy and monetary union.
The collection comprises about 12,000 objects, including exceptional pieces such as a sweater belonging to Rudi Dutschke. During the guided tour, visitors learn, among other things, what a medieval beer dispute with Jüterbog and the great town fire of 1780 in Gera have to do with Luckenwalde's rise.
Because the special exhibition room in the town hall is currently being used for other purposes due to renovations, the museum shows time-limited thematic presentations as the "WechselMuseum" within the permanent exhibition. The museum also offers city tours and tours of historic sites such as the cemetery of the Stalag III A prisoner-of-war camp and the Mendelsohn Hall.
