About the museum

Klingenberg am Main has been a wine town for centuries: as early as 1261, vineyards belonging to the Schenken von Clingenburg are mentioned in a document, and in 1298 the first vineyard name, “Mühle”, appears in a contract. Clay, however, brought the town its greatest wealth: the municipal mine yielded such high surpluses that the citizens lived tax-free for a long time and received an annual “Bürgergeld” (citizens' allowance).

The Weinbau- und Heimatmuseum presents both economic branches across four floors. The ground floor is devoted to vine care, harvest, pressing and the maturing of wine, including a collection of glasses and bottles. Two show galleries document clay mining in the past and present, and there are also mining lamps, ceramics, uniforms and a collection of pencils that recalls the Klingenberg clay used in pencils.

Further rooms show the Röllfeld village forge, a cooperage and a wheelwright's workshop, fully furnished workshops and models of Main River boats. The attic is devoted to crafts such as basket-making and tanning, along with an old schoolroom, a laundry and a weaving room; the third floor is devoted to women's lives around 1900. A new addition is a “Religious Niche” with saints' figures and church folk art.
