About the museum
As early as 1978, Günther, Heinz and Wendelin Rauch had the idea of presenting the development of furniture against the background of the company's history from 1897 in a museum of its own. The plan was realized in February 2009 with the opening of the house at the headquarters of Rauch Möbelwerke in Freudenberg am Main. The company explicitly regards it as a history museum, not an art or applied arts museum.
The exhibition looks at the changing culture of living and furnishing, and uses a few selected examples to show the development of furniture, above all the bedroom and how it is made. Key themes are the move from decorative styles to straight, clean forms, the importance of generational succession for the continuity of a family business, and the role of machine technology for markets and production volumes.
The tour follows seven sections: an introduction to furniture history, the founding of the company, three bedrooms as an example of continuity, carpentry around 1930 and joinery then and now, including works from the apprentice workshop, materials and techniques from tree to furniture, and the history of the company across four generations.
