About the museum

Stuttgart already had a winegrowing museum in the old town from 1937; it was lost in World War II. In 1979 the city opened a new museum in Uhlbach, a traditional wine village in Stuttgart's Neckar valley.

It is housed in the Alte Kelter, a half-timbered building that the municipality of Uhlbach had built in 1907 as a larger and more prestigious village wine press house. Grapes were pressed here until 1948; afterward the building served as a fire station and storehouse, among other uses, before being converted for the museum.

In 2011/12 the exhibition was completely renewed. In twelve themed sections it traces winegrowing in Stuttgart from Roman times to the present day – with tools, presses, decorated barrels and drinking vessels. It also covers the soils and climate of Stuttgart's vineyards, the vineyard consolidation of the 1960s and 1970s and the origins of Besenwirtschaften (seasonal winegrowers' taverns) and wine festivals. Visitors are welcome to sniff at the scent stations, and in videos Wengerter (as winegrowers are called in Swabia) talk about their work on steep slopes and in the press house. A separate area is devoted to artist Eugen Häfele, who captured winegrowing and festive culture in carvings, drawings and paintings.

A two-story glass-walled wine bar (Vinothek) has been inserted into the press hall, serving and selling wines from 29 Stuttgart wineries and sparkling wine producers. The museum belongs to the state capital Stuttgart and is operated by Stuttgart-Marketing GmbH.
