From November 11, 2025
Around 30 works by 22 artists from 1948 to the present are integrated into the permanent exhibition; according to the museum, the current presentation runs until fall 2027.
The museum's beginnings go back to the 1920s, when the company began systematically collecting historic vehicles. A first company museum opened at the Untertürkheim plant in 1936. It was redesigned in a new location within the plant in 1961 and extensively modernized in 1986.
With the current building at Stuttgart's NeckarPark in Bad Cannstatt, the museum gained a new home in 2006. The Dutch firm UNStudio, led by Ben van Berkel, designed a building around 47 meters tall whose floor plan follows a rounded triangle and inside which two tour routes wind around a central atrium like a double helix.
On nine levels and around 16,500 square meters, the permanent exhibition shows about 160 vehicles and 1,500 other exhibits. Visitors take elevators to the top and then follow either the seven chronological “Legend” rooms, which link company history with world history, or the themed “Collection” rooms with buses, trucks, emergency vehicles and celebrities' cars. Since 2024, the company's art collection has also been represented in the building with changing presentations.
The museum is one of Stuttgart's most visited cultural institutions and set a new record in 2025 with almost 946,000 visitors; more than half of the visitors come from abroad.
