About the museum
The Ortsmuseum (local museum) opened in 1989 as a "Heimatgeschichtliche Ausstellung" (local history exhibition) run by the Bürgerverein Untertürkheim in the former schoolhouse of the Rotenberg district of Stuttgart, and was redesigned in 2002. The association runs the exhibition on a volunteer basis and adds a new exhibition on a local theme every year.
The permanent exhibition spans from prehistory and early history through local history, winemaking and trades, up to industrialization. Separate sections are devoted to the Wirtemberg ancestral castle on the nearby hill and to the burial chapel. Highlights include a petrified deer antler from the Eemian interglacial, a model of Wirtemberg Castle, a 1880 kinetic music picture with 42 figures, and a clay fertility symbol from the Neolithic, considered the oldest find of its kind in southern Germany.
The Bürgerverein Untertürkheim was first founded in 1905, shortly after its merger with Stuttgart, and was refounded for the third time in 1973. Besides the museum, it regularly offers guided tours of the town.
