About the museum

In summer 1898, Pastor Otto Nöldeke was transferred to Mechtshausen near Seesen. The spacious parsonage on the edge of the village offered room not only for his family but soon also for his mother and her brother, the then 66-year-old Wilhelm Busch. He chose two rooms with a view of the Heber, enjoyed the large orchard and the nearby forest, and stayed until his death on January 9, 1908. He was buried in the Mechtshausen cemetery. Numerous poems were written during this time, which appeared in the collections “Zu guter Letzt” and “Schein und Sein”.

Today the Förderkreis Wilhelm-Busch-Haus Mechtshausen e. V. (friends' association) runs the house as a memorial. Visitors can see the two rooms Busch lived in and, on the ground floor, two exhibition rooms that present his life and work with a focus on the Mechtshausen years. An audio station plays letters and poems; a film about Busch runs in the former confirmation room, and a small shop offers books, posters and souvenirs.

The friends' association partly designs the garden according to old plans, for example with the restored ivy grotto. In spring, thousands of spring snowflakes and snowdrops bloom, and in summer the cherry trees mentioned in Busch's letters bear fruit. On the upper floor, the house shows rotating exhibitions of contemporary art.
