Paul-Fleming-Haus
Literary memorial in the birthplace of the Baroque poet Paul Fleming, a half-timbered building from the early 17th century in Hartenstein.
About the museum
The two-story half-timbered house opposite Hartenstein's town church was built in the early 17th century and long served as the town's school building. On this site – probably still in the previous building – Paul Fleming, the son of the schoolmaster at the time, was born in 1609. Fleming studied medicine in Leipzig, took part in a diplomatic mission to Russia and Persia, and is considered one of the most important German lyric poets of the Baroque era; he died young, in 1640, in Hamburg.
Around 2000, the house, which was badly in need of renovation, was restored with support from the Deutsche Stiftung Denkmalschutz (German Foundation for Monument Protection), including the roof and timber framing. After the work was completed, it opened in 2002 as a literary memorial; the town administration also uses one room for wedding ceremonies.
The small exhibition uses panels to explain Fleming's life and work and displays various editions of his poetry and secondary literature in a showcase. It also presents two other figures from Hartenstein: the sculptor Johann Böhme and the educator Gottfried Benedict Funk. The Paul-Fleming-Verein regularly hosts lectures and literary-musical events in the house.
