Museum Uranbergbau

Germany's only uranium mining museum, in Bad Schlema, tells the technical and social history of uranium mining in Saxony and Thuringia.

Opening hoursAdmission €6

About the museum

The Museum Uranbergbau opened on July 22, 1996 as a heritage site for uranium mining in Saxony and Thuringia. It is housed in the Kulturhaus Aktivist in Bad Schlema, right in the middle of the town, whose landscape and history were shaped by uranium extraction.

The focus is on the technical and social history of one of the largest uranium deposits in the world. The exhibition traces the beginnings of uranium ore mining, through processing and extraction, to the vast mine workings, and shows how the landscape was changed. A piece of uranium pitchblende can be tested with a Geiger counter.

Further sections cover the discovery of uranium and radioactivity, the remediation of the post-mining landscape, the mine rescue service, the former Oberschlema radium spa and a local history room. In addition there are a mineral exhibition and a painting exhibition.
