The Forum für Fotografie (Forum for Photography) opened in 2003 as a private initiative of Dr. Norbert Moos. It is located in the Kulturzentrum für Kunst und Fotografie (Cultural Center for Art and Photography) at Schönhauser Straße 8 in southern Cologne, a newly built museum-style complex that initially also housed two galleries and two photography foundations.
From 2008 to 2013 the forum shared its rooms with the Literaturhaus Köln (Cologne literature house). Today it describes itself as an independent platform for photography, video works, and new media, away from the commercial mainstream.
Each year the house presents about four exhibitions focused on artistic, conceptual photography. The aim is to promote contemporary and still little-known positions internationally; several photographers who are now known worldwide were first shown in Germany here. The forum regularly takes part in the Deutscher Fotobuchpreis (German Photobook Prize) and the Internationale Photoszene Köln, offers workshops on photography, photo book design, and image reception, and keeps a library that can be used after registration.
