Poller Heimatmuseum
Private exhibition of pictures and panels on the history of Cologne-Poll and Deutz in the halls of the Sportspark Cologne – open daily and free of charge.
About the museum
Poll once had a local history museum before: in the 1930s, the inn “Zum Jägerhof” served as a collecting point for mementos of the village. While searching for what remained of them, Poll local historian Hans Burgwinkel came across a small publication from 1930 by the archivist Johannes Krudewig in 2008. His commentary on it grew into an extensive private collection of pictures and documents on the riverside area between Deutz and Poll, the oldest piece dating from the 16th century.
From 2008 the Poller Heimatmuseum initially existed only as a website. When plans for a permanent display at the Jägerhof fell through, the operator of the Sportspark Cologne provided wall space in his tennis and streetball halls. The exhibition officially opened there on August 27, 2015. It is privately run and financed.
On display are around 700 pictures and information panels in A3 format, many designed with the help of Werner Müller. Topics include the local history of Poll, the once important shad fishery and the EU project to reintroduce the Allis shad (Maifisch), the Poller Maigeloog, historic Deutz with its train stations and military history, and the aviation pioneer Hanno Fischer from Westhoven. After vandalism, parts of the display were replaced with sturdier panels. There are also mobile exhibitions and information panels around the district.
