The support association shows how the desire to travel developed in both German states after the Second World War; on display are, among other things, air mattresses, swimming caps and reel-to-reel tape recorders. Since early June 2026.
About the museum
The Zweiländermuseum Rodachtal has been housed since 2009 in the Kemenaten (historic chamber buildings) of Streufdorf, part of a medieval church fortification right next to the village church. It is run by the municipality of Straufhain; a friends' association supports the museum's work and its educational programs.
The name refers to the former border location: the Rodachtal lies between Thuringia and Franconia, along a border that divided East and West for four decades. The museum tells the story of this region in the 20th century from the perspective of people in the villages and small towns, from rural life around 1900 through World War I, the Weimar Republic and the Nazi era to the German division and the opening of the border in 1989.
The tour is organized by era, with each period marked by a different color inside the building. Pictures, explanatory texts, films and objects convey the themes; a border model shows how the border fortifications were expanded between 1952 and 1989. In addition, an outdoor route with twelve stations leads to sites of the division along the former border, including border crossings, the border and signal fence, and the "Aktion Ungeziefer" of 1952.
